Protect Your Athlete & Their Smile

Plano Athlete Mouth Guards

Summer sports are kicking off which means it’s time to start thinking about how best to protect your young athlete and their smile. From football to hockey, baseball to rugby, mouth protectors help cushion a blow to the face, minimizing the risk of broken teeth and injuries to the lips, tongue, face or jaw. But with so many options available how do you decide which is best for your child?

Custom-made mouth guards tend to be the most comfortable option since they are created specifically for the athlete. Unlike other styles of mouth guards, custom guards are made by a dentist or dental laboratory after an impression of the teeth is taken. It’s important to note that teeth shift and move over time – especially for young people – so even a custom-made mouth guard will only really last for one season.

Boil and bite mouth guards are very affordable and can be purchased at most sporting goods stores. To fit a boil and bite guard, simply boil the pre-formed guard in water, then bite down into the warm plastic to shape the guard to the teeth. This style of mouth guard tends to offer a better fit than stock mouth protectors, but can be a bit bulkier than a custom-made mouth guard.

Stock mouth guards are inexpensive, pre-formed and ready to wear. These are generally the least comfortable option as they are not fitted to the athlete which means they are the most likely to fall out. Stock mouth guards can be very bulky which may make breathing more difficult.
